Lent is the great opportunity the Church offers us to truly convert our hearts to God. And this is something that only God himself can do in us if we allow ourselves to be transformed by him. Conversion is a gift from God. The only thing we can do is to let ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. A time of grace that God offers us as a gift.
The celebration of Ash Wednesday invites us today to a thorough review of our lives, our attitudes and our standards of behaviour, to begin a serious process of conversion.
Message of Pope Francis for Lent 2023: "We must listen to Jesus."
"Likewise, the synodal process can often appear difficult" he said, "and we can sometimes become discouraged. However, what awaits us at the end is undoubtedly something wonderful and amazing, which will help us to better understand God's will and our mission in the service of his kingdom."
A communication campaign based on the Lenten message of Pope Francis will be carried out. The campaign, entitled "With Him on the Mountain: Lenten Penance and the Synodal Journey", will include questions for reflection based on passages of Scripture and the Pope's message.
"Both the Lenten penance journey and the Synod journey have as their goal a transfiguration, both personal and ecclesial", Pope Francis said. "A transformation which, in both cases, has as its model the Transfiguration of Jesus and is brought about by the grace of his paschal mystery."
"In the same way, the synodal journey is rooted in the tradition of the Church and at the same time open to the new."
"To deepen our knowledge of the Master, to understand and fully embrace the mystery of his salvation, achieved in the total gift of self-inspired by love, we must allow ourselves to be led by him and detach ourselves from mediocrity and vanity", he encouraged. "We must set out on a journey, an upwards path which, like a mountain hike, requires effort, sacrifice and concentration."
